Thanks for sharing the minutes of yesterday's meeting in this manner. I wished I could have attended, but the new school year has started. I shared the Literacy Week information at my new site, University Park in Salinas.

The Agriculture and Land-Based Training Association (ALBA) is accepting applications for its Farmer Education Program. It is designed for people who want to start a small farm business or advance in their agricultural careers. When coursework is completed, participants can access organic farmland in the small farm incubators operated by ALBA.

The course starts on Thursday, October 25th, and meets twice a week through March. Course fees start at $300, depending on family income and dependents. Scholarships and payments plans will be available to individuals who require these options to participate.

Participants will learn every aspect of operating a small farm business, ranging from crop selection to marketing. Classroom instruction is combined with field days and meetings with local agricultural experts. Interested persons may call ALBA at 758-1469 or visit its web site at www.albafarmers.org for information and application forms.

New features of the course include simultaneous instruction in both English and Spanish, computer skills education, and short-term modules designed to assist employers in advancing workforce skills. Existing small-scale farmers in the region are also welcome to enroll in modules to learn about production planning, organic farming and business development.

"This year the Farmer Education Program increases its focus on capacity building in organic and sustainable farming to create a more sustainable food system in California,” said Natalia Bonilla, agriculture education coordinator. “We literally are sowing the seeds for change and encourage people to take the first step."

ALBA is a non-profit group that creates opportunities for beginning and limited-resource farmers in the Central Coast region, and operates two educational farms as farm business incubators near Salinas and Watsonville.
